WHITE HYDROGEN THE SEARCH IS ON.

The best way to access naturally occurring underground hydrogen (commonly called white or gold hydrogen) by drilling is to target iron-rich or ophiolite rock formations where a natural chemical process called serpentinization continuously generates the gas.

Instead of manufacturing green hydrogen via surface electrolysis powered by wind or solar, companies are increasingly exploring and drilling directly into Earth’s crust to harvest this clean resource. Existing oil and gas drilling rigs can be converted and sometimes white hydrogen can be found below gas or oil bells.

Key Approaches to Drilling for Geologic Hydrogen

  • Locating Natural Accumulations:
    • Geologists use satellite imagery, magnetic surveys, and AI mapping to find surface seeps or subsurface traps (often marked by bleached soil circles or “fairy circles”).
    • Once a high-concentration reservoir is located, operators use conventional vertical or horizontal drilling techniques—similar to oil and gas exploration, but with a much smaller environmental footprint.
  • Stimulated Geologic Hydrogen (In-Situ Production):
    • Where favorable iron-rich rocks exist underground but lack free-floating trapped gas, emerging methods involve drilling wells to inject treated water and specific catalysts into the bedrock.
    • This artificially kicks off or accelerates the natural serpentinization reaction (water reacting with iron at high underground temperatures) to systematically produce harvestable hydrogen gas.
  • Safety and Design Adjustments:
    • Because hydrogen molecules are extremely tiny, highly diffusive, and prone to leaking through standard metals, specialized well designs, robust casing materials, and non-reactive components are required to prevent escapes during extraction. Existing equipment needs to be modified.
