MILLIONS OF TONS OF STEEL REQUIRED TO BUILD RENEWABLES !!!

he UK will need more than 10 million tonnes of steel in the coming years if it is to become more energy self-sufficient. The statistic has been published in a new report by the UK steelmaker whose primary site is at Port Talbot looking at how crucial the steel sector is to decarbonising the UK’s energy supply and reducing its dependence on foreign imports. The report found that more than five million tonnes of steel will be needed to build thousands of wind turbines at sea by 2030. While planned solar projects and nuclear power plants will need around 3.5m tonnes of steel by 2050. An estimated 1.5m tonnes of steel will be needed to build the infrastructure for hydrogen production and distribution as well as large-scale carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects. Steel will also be needed to unlock new sources for possible offshore facilities.
